Shrine of the Gold Monkey: An illustrated guide to Gortez

Greetings pirates! This illustrated guide to Gortez will cover the entire instance that leads to the Gold Monkey.

So let's get started: This is your starting map. Note: The 1,2,3,4 are the areas you visit in order.

Once you enter the area you have to seek out Aguirre who tells you that you must complete three tasks before you can meet Gortez.

    1. The fist task is defeat a rather heavy Water Mole named Ordaz. This is what the battle board looks like:

    Some Notes:

    A His health is 387
    B. When you solo you must face him alone. Which means to companions!
    C. He has no helpers either, so make use of the Exploding Barrels. But be careful because they will hurt you also.

    2. After Ordaz is defeated Aguirre tasks you with collecting eight Spider Eggs, two of them are our in the open, the others are guarded by Spiders if your not careful. 3. When the Spider Eggs are collected Aguirre sends you to the crystal cave to hear the wisdom of the Crystals. Once completed Aguirre finally send you to talk to Gortez

As you may have guessed Gortez isn't happy to see you and things go down hill from there:

During this point of the battle you MUST GET TO THE TOTEM STATUES there is no point in defeating the enemies, Gortez will summon a new one at the end of the round if one is defeated. Since you can have up to four companions during this fight they can activate the Totem Statues. So follow this rule: Guide you and your companions to the Totem Statues to advance the battle:

When Gortez joins the fray he summons five archers as well. This is important: Focus your attacks on Gortez, plummel this brute with every thing you got and you will come out victorious.

Ordaz didn't used to be a sumo. He was much easier before they changed him.

Gortez is a tough boss if you're not at a good lvl to beat him, I've seen them videos on others defeating him

For the Ordaz fight, you don't get any companions, however, your pet has the same chance of joining your fight as in any other fight.

With ALL DUE respect, this is the wrong strategy for Gortez. What you described above is exactly what everyone initially attempted and obviously had a hard time taking Gortez down. You are making the fight TWICE as hard if you go directly for the STATUES.

Steps to making Gortez fight much "easier":

    1) As you start the fight, remain tight together (companions and/or groups).
    2) Focus fire on the nearest enemies and take them out first. You should be able to kill the closer ones quick enough by the time the furthest enemies make it in range without taking much damage at all.
    3) Remain in close formation and finish off the remaining enemies.
    4) After all the enemies are down, click all the statues EXCEPT the southeast OR southwest corner (you choose which, but make sure you communicate it to others so there is no confusion)
    5) Once all the other 3 statues are clicked, regroup near the one that is left. Then once everyone is in position, click it to summon Gortez.
    6) Everyone is now in range of focus fire on Gortez from the first round, because he always appears between the southeast and southwest corner.
    7) RAIN FIRE on him.

    Logic behind doing this:
    1) The worst thing to do in ANY fight is to give the enemy your health without taking some of his away. If you are scattering to click the statues, all you are doing is giving free hits to the enemies round after round until the 4 statues are clicked. That's like 4 turns that you are getting hit and doing very little if any damage in return.
    2) When the 4 statues are clicked, the enemies that were on the grid dont disappear. So now you have the entire group scattered at the 4 corners of the room. You now have TWICE as many enemies on the grid. And a few of your companions or players are hurt by running through enemies trying to get to the statues.

Re: Shrine of the Gold Monkey: An illustrated guide to Gortez

When fighting Gortez many things come into play. Pirate class is the first thing. I always leave 2 of my long range attackers on left & right bottom sides this away when Gortez falls they can attack from a distance while I bring my close range classes back after turning on top 2 totems. Since I am a swashbuckler I need to be close combat I use the sneaks to help hide my Pirate plus is gives a boost to backstab. I am sure each class has a different way of being able to defeat Gortez.

Thank you for creating your guide.

Thanks for the guide! I should be hitting this quest tonight, hopefully. Do you know if Gortez drops anything good?
