Didn't see this before posting. Anyway, that's another person suggesting ranged companions. Lemme just check that off the list. Also, the ones with best damage are ultimately swashbucklers by default, so I'm glad I took the time to toss quite a few of them into my revised list in the above post. (I always forget how beastly their weapon power is. Instead, I always think it's the buccaneers with the most raw damaging WP.) Thanks for your contribution to the discussion, man! I need all the tips, tricks and strategies I can get.

I'm still configuring new set ups based on your input.
The smaller they get the lower their stats. So breaking heads as quick and many as possible not only means you will make the Ebon pop up faster but killing the 3 heads after he disappears again easier. Normally Toro Bonnie with any other good riposte or overwatch companion works well.

Cool Re: Which companions work best against the Hydra?

I did it! I beat the Hydra on my [technically] second attempt - because the blasted Ebon glitched out and buggered off the first time 'round - on my privateer, Nora. I took the Marchioness, Old Scratch and Bonnie Anne with me into battle and we all managed to survive. It was beautiful! *sniff sniff* Below, I'll show pictures of my progress. Thank goodness for Old Scratch's mojo buffs which allowed me to shield March in a sturdy bubble of just over 3K worth of damage protection. Yee-haw! I also summoned Old Scratch's ally as well as a Royal Marine from doubloons - though he didn't see through to the end. R.I.P.

Thank you guys for your input! It helped me out a lot. I just hope the rest of my pirate classes fare as well as the privateer did. But I'll have to wait to find out; the rest of 'em still have the Labyrinth to fight through. When I get them to the Hydra Cave, I will check in and record their progress here. Re: Which companions work best against the Hydra?

Last night I fought the Hydra again - this time on my musketeer - and I took Chantal Livingstone, Old Scratch and a wounded El Toro with me. (I was too focused on fighting to rush off to Miracle Mitch. Besides, I knew I'd shield El Toro soon enough.) There are pictures of my progress below. Some insight though; I think the only reason I did well in both classes' quest given fights so far is because Fiona has Valor's Armor via Ranchero's Finery and my privateer already has one in her arsenal of "spells". But I'm nigh positive that the rest of my girls don't have Valor's Armor. Without that beautiful bubble, buffed by Old Scratch, I can only imagine how my buccaneer, swashbuckler and witchdoctor will do otherwise. Ooh boy... Anyway, onto pictures of Dead-eye Davenport's victory!

Re: Which companions work best against the Hydra?

    Couple simple suggestions:
    1. No mass attacks, including doubloons.
    2. No pets allowed.
    3. No pushing back.
    4. No walking around, hold position, attack only nearest heads required by task.
    5. Less double taps.
    6. Max buff (dodge, accuracy etc.) and heal doubloons.
    7. No summons, they no help, only trigger additional counter attacks.

Oh. Thank ye kindly for the tips, mate! In response to each suggestion:
    1. I try to keep mass AoE attacks to a minimum, if possible, unless it's necessary to demolish ice blockades or outright kill the Ebon head.
    2. I always forget to unequip my pets, and that's a good idea, but sometimes they help. Especially if they heal or give "Grants [blank]".
    3. If you're talking about pushing the enemies back via wind doubloons, I don't. No point in 'em, as far as I can see. Can't use traps anyway; they fill up the board and risk keeping the boss from rearing its ugly head from under the water.
    4. Right. I try not to move around the board too much, unless I can't reach the hydra heads I've been required to defeat. It also helps not to group up too much, otherwise I lose line of sight for my musketeers, witchdoctors and even privateers.
    5. Eh. I try, but most of my companions have Double Tap - in one form or another - as well as other attacks that activate when they hit or miss, are hit or missed, the enemy closes in, and so on.
    6. Absolutely!
    7. Yeah, I see where you're coming from. It can be annoying when the lesser heads are killed by NPCs like my pet or summoned allies. The reason I summon at all is to distract the enemy and keep them from aggro'ing on my own crew for as long as possible.

I appreciate the suggestions, man! I still have my buccaneer, swashbuckler and witchdoctor to go through the Hydra cave. It's gonna be quite different, going from ranged to melee fighting when Brass and Scar have to fight the vile creature. Here's hoping they make it out in one piece.

Cool Re: Which companions work best against the Hydra?

Finally decided to face the Hydra on my buccaneer. Despite not having any Valor's Armor or Blood Flames—curse ye, Captain Blood!—whilst being subject to a lot of the enemies' Flanking and whatever else, I did extremely well for a melee-based fighter with an almost exclusively melee-based team. Brass (or Belle, as most call her by default) called upon Peter Quint, Barnabus and Nausica for the challenge of fighting the Aquilan beast. It was my first and only attempt. Here are pictures of how it went down...

You have enough buccaneers in a crew and you choose musket? Why? You have no boosting buff for musket. Nausica has low p.def and low dodge. And one more - cleanup your doubloons list.

She already beat the fight so I don't think she's too concerned about which companions she used anymore.

To answer your first question, I did it because not only are Quint and Barn both buccaneers, but Brass (my pirate) is one as well. Three outta four of the same class ain't bad. Besides, nothin' wrong with a little variety, mate; it doesn't hurt to try something new or spice things up. You are correct in that I don't have any buffs to boost an agility-using companion, but you really don't need to buff everyone in your crew all the time. It helps, of course, but it doesn't stop you from coming out the victor in a fight—as proven in the second and third-to-last pictures of my previous post.
I'm not sure what you mean by "p.def"; and you're right, she does have pretty low albeit decent dodge. However, other than picking her for variety's sake, I chose Nausica because her armor is very good, considering she's a musketeer; her accuracy is much better than Barn, Quint and myself; her health and WP (weapon power) are on par with theirs/mine; and not only is she stocked up on great Abilities and Powers, said Powers allow her to move around the board whilst attacking for four different rounds. All of that makes her a powerhouse; a force to be reckoned with! Those reasons are why I chose a "musket". By the way, Nausica is the one who landed the killing blow to the boss Ebon. That's gotta count for somethin', no?
Also, I rarely fight alongside other players, so I often tend to run out of doubloons rather quickly. I try to use up the useless ones as I can, but I can't help hoarding the rest for emergencies. Sorry, lad.
