Companion Leveling: A Guide On Leveling Your Companion

So I will start off by asking one simple question - When you receive Companion Points do you automatically train a companion? Most of you will answer "yes" to this question which is fine, but it is not the best way to level your Companions in the long run. In this guide you will learn why you don't level your companion right away when receiving Companion Points.

What I have found is the best way to level your companion is to wait until you are 3 levels above your companion's level you will see why in the pictures below -

In this picture my Pirate is level 4.

This is my Bonnie Anne. She is level 3 (the same level as when you first get her) now you will see I have my mouse hovered over the "Train" button and in green you will see 1 Companion Point will take her 1/3 of the way to level 4 (Pirate's Level)

Now this is my awesome Wing Chun, Crane Student. He is level 2 (I leveled him up 1 level to test my theory) and you will see my mouse is hovered over the "Train" button once again and in green you will see 1 Companion Point will take him 2/3 of the way to level 3.

♪YoHoHo a pirate's life for me!♪ - Quickly does some questing until level 5 - (Btw I started a new player just for this)

In this picture my Pirate is level 5.

This is my Bonnie Anne once again. She is level 3 still (the same level as when you first get her) now you will see I have my mouse hovered over the "Train" button but now in green you will see 1 Companion Point will take her 2/3 of the way to level 4.

Once again my Oh-So-Epic Wing Chun. He is still level 2 but now when I hover my mouse over the "Train" button 1 Companion Point will take him 3/3 of the way to level 3 which means he will only need 1 Companion Point to level up.

As you can see, this is the most effective way to level your companions because you will have plenty of Companion Points to spread out amongst all your many companions in the future. I hope my guide really helps out all of those people who tend to train their companions the second they get a Companion Point and run out of CP's (Companion Points) too fast. Thank you all!

Thanks for explaining this mate! I have noticed this as well and was wondering if I was better off saving the training points until the companions are lower level. I managed to stockpile over 30 training points on my level 12 buccaneer yet keep all companions 2 levels under me! Cheers!

I have found a rule of thumb that works for me. If the training point won't get them to the next level, don't use it.

At higher levels you might even want to wait even longer.
    Personally I did:
    - Nothing Level 1~4
    -1 TP to 1 Level at 4~12
    -1 TP to 2 Level at 12-35
After this I actually had to farm additional TP to catch up! Even when I was giving some of my companions as much as 3 levels at a time.

But sure it helps out. I am currently level 47 and I never really get mad if I get the wrong companion appear in the battle. They're all useful now.

Nice Guide! It makes senses and it could be effective for people who are new to companions!

Re: Companion Leveling: A Guide On Leveling Your Companion

True, but I generally like having companions that are the same level as me, because then they can help more, where as if I had a companion that was a couple levels behind, they would die a lot. This happened a lot when I was level 8 or 9 and my Bonnie Anne was level 6.

Re: Companion Leveling: A Guide On Leveling Your Companion

To some degree... Training Tomes are one of the most valuable objects in the game.
The effectiveness of companion training tomes seems to vary as you go along.
As you continue to progress you will find you have to be 4 levels ahead of your companions to get them to train a level on a single tome.

Trying to keep all your companions at your same pirate level is not an efficient use of the tomes, and will make things much more costly in the long run, as you continue to obtain more companions (I had over 25 in beta). If you dont keep them all close to your level (within 3 IMO) they are detrimental.

I have had no problem with the game keeping my companions at 3 levels below me. I level, and I can level each of my companions with a single training tome each.

Training tomes may seem ample at first, but you will find the number of them going down, and the cost to replace them going up, as you progress.
