Wandering the Planes:A Guide to Cosmology beyond the Spiral

What with Buccaneer Expert's characters's constant walking on the Shadow Realm, and Felix's experiences with Spirit Travel,it has had me thinking, how many of these Planes and places beyond the Physical Realm are there?

Spirit Travel is the magical science and ability of existing outside of one's body and outside of one's reality.Oftentimes, when mastered, the body and spirit can both go to those places.

While we do have a lot of it developed,I decided to make something sensical out of it,and to define the Astral Plane,Shadow Realm, and with it,the whole of the matter. This has led me to explain Felix's immortality much better, explain reality in the Spiral as a whole, and overall create something that makes sense, out of various beliefs,my own imagination, and such. So,without further ado, here it is,and abstract map of Reality in the Spiral:

The Nucleus of the whole thing is the Eternal Source, often called just ''The Source''.It is the oldest piece of reality. Many have identified it with figures like the Nameless God,Bon Dye,and Brahma. It is the source of all light, darkness, life, and magic.Occasionally, there is a process called Convergence by which it focuses itself into one spot, thus leading to things like Felix's birth.

The first degree of solidification is the Forge of Reality. It is a plane with no form, and no duality. All light and all Shadow are the exact same thing, and the inhabitants are powerful creatures with amazing powers but no desires to direct that power towards, much like the Loa.Also, several messiahs are here, like the Moodha. It is a place of buzzing ecstasy, and power. All things are an endless ocean of liquid light and darkness, molded further, until duality begins,in the form of the Abyss and the Sanctuary.

The Causal Plane is a place of cause and effect. It begins to bear some resemblanceo the physical plane in a more perfect form, glistening with the sunlight of the Eternal Source. While thoughtforms exist here and identities assumethe shape of bodies, often in forms appealing to the viewer, everything possess an evanescent and somewhat
ghostly quality, as if its shape and substance teeters on a wire between the world of form and causality and that of
pure existence. The core of it all is a big temple known as the Sanctuary that which is often called Heaven.

The Adverse of it,however,is the Abyss, and is the prison of those who have been banished in the most powerful waysThe Abyss, also known as the Acausal Realm,is where Tartarus and other such iprisons, for those like Cronus, are here.Besides them, the Acausal Realm also has creatures that embody the primordial chaos, which are wicked to no end.DUality is full in every way, with one wolrd being pure good, the other pure evil.THe only other entities here besides the imprisoned are the creatures that embody it...and they are not pretty sights.

The second point is one where duality blurrs, and ethics no longer tie to Shadow and Light. The first place is the Mental Plane, where there is no boundary between the imagined, and the real, emotions thoughts and ideas flying every way. This place also begins to acquire the traits of our world. It is also where you will find the House of Akashic Records,as well as a high hilltop through which one may view the whole of Creation at once.

In opposite to it,you will find the Realm of Insanity. It is here that the Shadow Realm's insane warping qualities begin, and it is here that the most insane have dwelved. The fears are twisted into reality, fear, just as thought and emotion, exisiting as an aspect of reality, rather than a separation from it.With the exception,of course, that no ring will protect you.Only by knowing your own fear and silencing it,will you cross this place of torment.Much like the MEntal Plane,it begins to resemble our world, but with the warping and darkness quality to it.

In the Astral Plane, however, dualism becomes fanatical, where emotions swell in favor of one thing over another, and ideas like “good” and “evil” are born.No longer tied to Shadow and Light, anything good and anything evil can be here.It is divided into many many kingdoms, chief among which are that of Fire,Ice and Storm, where the remnants of the Elements begin to manifest. It is also here that the properties of the Sun,Star, and Moon begin to take manifestation,as they are the center of power and the ticking of the SPiral.FInally, while there is a boundary between the Imagined and the Real,it is less defined, and you can conjure if you can conceive!

The Shadow Realm was described by Fearless right here.I will only say that as all things Astral are twisted, the Sun,Star and Moon, become the Black Sun,Shadow Star, and Dark Side of the Moon.

We arrive at the final point of the journey, the Physical World with no duality besides good and evil, and where the mortals walk and talk, going about every day business, unaware of even the Astral Plane. This world has a clear boundary between the imagined and the real and is divided into three parts:

1.The Material World:This is where we live, this is the Spiral. The stiched pieces of the First World.
2.The Crossroads:When a Summoner ushes his trance further to summon something,he is not going to summon it onto the Material World just yet,but rather, meet it at some middle ground, the Crossroads. They are governed by Eshu,Legba,Hecate,Ganesha, and any other Spirit of the Crossroad.
3.The Spirit World:Spirits, both abstract and that of the dead may dwell here,as this is all the same place as the Spirit World that is visited in Old Scratch's promotion quest.Spirits dwell and bicker on it,but also work the miraculous.

(Hecate guarding the Crossroads)

ANd with that,I thank ye for listening to this lecture. The movement of power into thought, thought into form, and form into energy, completes its linear descent in the physical plane, the realm of flesh and substance, where thespiritual organization of things seems lost andduality is no longer an abstract, but is a concrete andinescapable reality. The creative force, the light and sound of the EternalSource, here manifests not as spirit, but as flesh, as dust,
as rock and water, as planets and electrons. These waters run deep.

The energy used in Shadowmancy comes from the Shadow Realm, yes?

Assuming this is the case, would that mean that Shadowmancy is actually weaker than most magics? Or is there something about the Shadow Realm and the energy within it that makes it different from the others in a way that makes it more powerful?

Shadows themselves form a backbone to the world as it is,and as such manipulations on that level take a greater effect. It's like the difference between pushing with maximum strength on a hard spot, and pushing with minimal strength on a soft spot. It's just easier to affect reality with less powerful shadowmancy than it is with more powerful non-shadowmancy.

As for it originating in the Shadow Realm, most Shadowmancy did come from the Shadow Realm, before Morganthe came. After she punched a hole in the world of Shadow, she probably let others access the Realm of Insanity, and the Abyss, something that had only grown since Old Cob resurfaced.

Ah, that makes sense. So new question: If Moordenaar's Magic Dispersion works by suppressing activity on the Astral Plane, how would that affect Shadowmancers? The same, different, or not at all?

Alright, so we know Shadowmancy did originate in the Shadow Realm, but that fact does not make it any less powerful than other magics because shadows are the "backbone" of the world. Would you mind explaining how they form this "backbone"?

Just the same, because Moordnaar's Magic Dispersion doesn't affect solely the Astral Plane, but rather, affects everything on ''that level'' which means it works on the astral plane and its darker half.

When Light and Dark diverge, they are very much separate(The Sanctuary and the Abyss)and the closer they get to materializing(into the physical)the more they can begin to merge. This is why most mortals, like humans, have both good traits and bad traits, whereas higher beings like Spirits, have Dark Halves and Light Halves,as two different aspects of one form, still having both yet having them separate and even higher beings, like angels, haven't one or the other.

How exactly it is that the Shadow supports reality is something that I haven't fully defined, and even then,it enters into overy complicated things. But basically,Shadow acts as the bones of things in the real world, because nothingness is the blank slate upon which creation is built.
