The Tongue-An Explanation

Rate this Entry
In the Spiral, there are many different abilities one can gain. Some are magical, some are mundane, and some can operate strangely. The Tongue is one of these strange abilities.

To put it simply, the Tongue is the ability to understand and converse with animals. This refers to all animals and nonsapients as a whole-a person who can communicate with some and not others has a different ability. What separates this from other powers is that a person will never realize the truth about a person having the ability without having had it themselves. If they see a person conversing with an animal, and said animal is not a close companion of this person, they will assume mental illness almost automatically. Users are forbidden to mention it to non-users, and if they do the non-user will also assume mental illness.

There are three main ways of gaining the tongue:
1-Being born with it: This is by far the rarest of the three, as it's extremely unlikely to be born with it, unless your parents are tongue-users. Normally, it's a one in a million chance, however a parent who gained it during their life will increase your chances 100x, and a natural-born parent increases it by 1000x. Unlike the other two, nothing is required to keep the ability-It won't wane. It usually springs up during a person's early years.
2-Drinking a specific potion: Some time ago, a woman with the Tongue created a potion that allowed a person to gain it. However, this was seen as a fake: Not only did she continuously reveal she had it, but due to the rule of no one without the Tongue discovering it, anyone without the tongue who attempts to make it will universally fail. Out of the three, this is the least risky but also the least effective-unless a person exercises conversing with a non-pet creature at least once a month, they will lose the ability.
3-Transformation into an animal: This is common of shapeshifters, though anyone can gain the powers this way. Transforming essentially switches you into an animal's language, allowing one to hear animals, but not communicate unless others have the tongue. This is usually the riskiest-unless you're naturally a shapeshifter-but more effective than the second method, as transforming again or engaging in conversation with a non-pet animal at least once a year will retain the ability.

Should a person lose the Tongue, they will still remember previously having it, and not assume things about Tongue-users. However, the potion will still fail if a person attempts to make it.

That's all I have for now. Questions?

    I have some questions...

1.Who was the first bearer of the Tongue?

2.Does animalistic shapeshifting enable the Tongue,or does the Tongue enable animalistic shapeshifting?

3.Can some people know about the Tongue and not assume any mental illness simply because of past encounters with the supernatural?

4.What drawbacks does having the Tongue have?

5.Was their any ''witch hunt'' or something similar, where Tongue-bearers were selectively destroyed?

    1. That is mostly unknown.

    2. The former.

    3. No, it's a part of the abilities self-defense.

    4. Aside from not getting the animals to shut up, certain people(*coughArielcough*) can 'burn' a person with Tongue via touch.

    5. Due to the rarity of the abilities, a 'witch hunt' would only be a handful of people, if any at all.
