No More Message Boards?

Apparently, they have done away completely with the main message boards on the Pirate101 website:

I'm guessing that the self-destructive lack of updating conversations on a regular, timely basis led to an abandonment of the boards by the player base.

What do you think? Was this announced somewhere that I didn't see? On the last KI Live?

Oh boy. This ghost town called Pirate101 Central is still alive with it's forums. Shocker.


Not surprised, no updates, no reason for players to play or interact on their forums. More wreckage to come with the lack of any updates, especially world ones. A wise "man" once said memes on the Pirate101 Twitter shall "save" a game. Hope he's having fun.

Glad to see that I moved away with life and even other games away from Kingsisle. It seems that nothing has changed as much ever since my last interaction with the game. *Really hoping this negative criticism that is meant to be in a "caring constructive" way doesn't get censored or removed like feedback is getting removed from their Dis(c)(o)rd server*.

Hey, Logan! Thanks for stopping in. I am much more comfortable in this organized setting than in the spammy chaos of the Pirate101 Discord. Even with the lack of updates, and lack of conversation, there is still data to collect for the wiki. Once Jester was able to resolve the wiki migration issues and we could view and edit again, things settled down. I do feel like the knight who tends all of the various cups in the room at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, waiting for someone to solve all of the puzzles to find me, though.

I noticed this as well (which was particularly inconvenient for me because I just acquired a one-month membership and had been waiting for years to make a post in the message boards, LOL).

I decided to see if the page for the message boards (www.pirate101.com/forum) was still up, and it was, but they obviously removed it from the menu. Only people who have previous knowledge of it can think to access it.

What a ship-wreck this poor game is becoming.

My messy thoughts:

1.) Migration to P101 Central

Players who prefer the forum style of the message boards over alternatives such as twitter and discord should migrate to P101 Central. In my opinion, we are a much better forum community than the main message boards.

Instantaneous posting rather than waiting days to reply and post, ability to post media files like videos and photos, as well as perks such as user profile, custom avatars and signatures, and such make this a much more functional and expressive place than P101.

You can also be more critical of the game here and discuss more sensitive issues.

Personally I would like it if Hawk gave a shout out for such people to come here instead of Discord (I can suggest it).

2.) Lack of KI Interaction

That all being said, I still think the P101 Message Boards where the best way to (somewhat) directly express yourself to KI. Due to mandatory moderation, KI are guaranteed to read peoples ideas and concerns, though whether such ideas make it to people who can actually enforce change is another issue. The biggest issue I can remember is that "savages" dialogue incident a long long while back.

I don't think other P101 social media is as interactive. Hawk does comment a lot on p101 discord, but all the other KI staff do nothing.

3.) Thoughts on P101 Discord

I frequently use the P101 Discord and I think it has its own pros and cons. I will outline my experience there.

Pros:

• Does not seem to fall into traps other discord clique trap- It is not really "cliquey" and exclusive. I played another huge game with 100k+ members on its discord and the discord mods and game staff had clear favorites which led to "cliques". Personally, I reckon since Hawk loves everyone and the community size of p101 discord is relatively small, this clique issue has not noticeably manifested
• Instantaneous communication
• Best way to contact KI staff imo (ok this is just Hawk but Hawk is pretty active)
• Still has good variety- a suggestions channel, art channel, general discussion channel etc...
• Good moderation, though could be better

Cons:

• Not the ideal place for in-depth discussions or posting large detailed chunks of text, and in turn replying with detail. Forums are much better for this. This is true for discord in general. However, one place you can post detailed chunks is in the suggestions thread- surprisingly the p101 community is more receptive to reading good, long and well formatted ideas relative to other discord servers
• Those aged (probably) over 30 seem to have no clue what is going on. The mechanics of navigating through discord is certainly more complex than a simple message board. Slang and abbreviation also confuses some players.
  
  For players who are unfamiliar with Discord it feels like you have landed on a foreign planet and are trying to communicate with it's alien denizens
  
  Mostly comprised of younger people which is a con for older people who have no idea how to assimilate with younger people culture. Again, everyone is welcome (it really is not cliquey), but its like trying to learn the ways of a foreign culture for older people so they all leave.
• As said, moderation could be better at times. It is a small community with not many mods (including volunteer mods), so some questionable content slips through the twilight hours every now and then
• Some users don't use grammar at all. They type large chunks of text with no full stops and commas and its just a mess to read. Though to be honest there were such people in the message boards

4.) Thoughts on other p101 social media

Not super active on these and I think p101 central filters the names of these media for whatever reason, but they seem to be very active as well. Mostly memes and people complaining of lack of content. Not a huge fan of how KI wants us to use these for things like puppet pirates or art contests.

That is exactly how I felt, but at least I have my son to answer my questions. He is 24 and uses Discord almost 24/7 for all the various games and things he does online. He didn't know his friend's cell phone number because they just message on Discord.

There is just SO MUCH constantly going on over there -- by the time I have read a question posed in the morning and scrolled through the follow-up comments during my time offline, it makes me give up on trying to provide an answer to the question now because the general conversation has completely changed topics. I mentioned Hawkules this morning about the Rajah companion that was announced in December, but I don't know if he'll respond because so much has been posted since then.

Players stopped using the Message Boards because Kingsisle negelected them -- they went for weeks at a time without new posts being approved. It was hard to remember if I'd even replied to a conversation, and then all of a sudden there are four replies all saying the same thing because it took two weeks to appear. Not to mention that questions posed by players were almost never answered officially, only by responses from other players. Lack of updates to the game being the main topic of conversation, even long-term persistent players like @anecorbie and myself were discouraged enough to give up on our memberships and those message boards.

I visit the Discord, but all of the spam there is distracting.
