Character Experience (known as "XP") are the points a character earns to gain levels, learn new abilities. and use more powerful equipment on the Battleboard. Nautical Experience (known as "Nautical" or "Nautical XP") raises the Pirate's Nautical Level, and is necessary to use higher level Ships and be stronger in broadside combat. Certain levels of Nautical XP open up use of more powerful Ships and Ship equipment.

All Regular Quests have a specific amount of XP which is awarded when the character turns in the quest. Generally more XP is given for higher-level quests. No XP is received for Companion Promotion Quests or Instance Quests. The activities of a quest may involve defeating a specific enemy, speaking to an NPC, finding an item or place, or a combination of many such goals. Quests generally award either XP and Nautical XP, both, or neither.

Winning on the Battleboard awards a Pirate a small amount of XP based on a comparison of the Pirate's level versus the level of enemies. Winning in Broadside Combat by sinking the Enemy Ship rewards the Pirate with only Nautical XP. If Broadside combat results in Boarding (a Battleboard appearing on the deck), the character will gain both XP and Nautical XP. Players can use the Companion Task Sailin'[1] to earn additional Nautical XP until the Nautical Level matches the Pirate's Level. Nautical Level can exceed the Character Level through normal game play.

See the Level Chart to see how a Pirate's Practice Points, Training Points, Health, and Stats increase with the character's level.
